Narrative:

     Almira Louisa Shaw was born in Mar 1870 in Illinois.7,8,9 She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Toulon Twp., Stark Co., Illinois, in the household of her parents, George Shaw and Almira Greenfield.17
     Almira moved to Iowa about 1877 with her father, and perhaps her mother, but it is not known whether her mother was still living then.18,19 She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Grant Twp., Hardin Co., Iowa, in the household of her father, and stepmother, Matilda [surname unknown].20 She appeared on the 1885 State Census of Grant Twp., Hardin Co., Iowa, in the household of her father and stepmother.21
     Almira married first William S. Young, son of David Young and Jennie Burger, on 30 Oct 1887 in Hardin Co., Iowa.10,11
     As a child she is listed by the given name Almira, but as an adult she seems to have consistently used her middle name, Louisa, which was shown as her given name on her tombstone.22,23,24
     Her husband died in 1894.25
     Louisa appeared on the 1895 State Census of Marengo, Iowa Co., Iowa. Her children Jennie and Stella were listed as living with her, and her husband is listed as having died in the prior year.23
     Almira married second Horatio M. Knisley, son of Daniel Knisley and Catharine Nablo, on 22 Jan 1896 in Rockwell City, Calhoun Co., Iowa.12,13,14
     Louisa and Orashio appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, enumerated 12 Jun 1900, reporting that they rented their home. Their daughter Lola was listed as living with them, as were Louisa's daughters by her prior marriage, Jennie and Stella Young.26 She was listed as working as a laundress.27
     Louisa and Orashio appeared on the 1905 State Census of 1110 West Thomas Ave., Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, reporting that their home was valued at $700, but not indicating whether they owned it or not. Their children Lola and Lulu and her daughters Jennie and Stella by her prior marriage were listed as living with them, as was his brother John, a brick layer.28,29,30,31,32,33,34
     Louisa and Orashio appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 1110 West Thomas Ave., enumerated 15 Apr 1910, reporting that they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Lola, Lulu and Hollie were listed as living with them.35
     Louisa and Orashio appeared on the 1915 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, reporting that they were renting their home. This census does not identify households, but it appears that their children Lulu, Hollie and Jerome was living with them. She reported her church affiliation as Baptist, but the other members of the family did not report one. Their children Lulu, Hollie and Jerome were listed as living with them.36,37,38,39
     Louisa and Orashio appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 722 Thomas Ave., enumerated 3 Jan 1920, reporting that then owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Hollie and Jerome were listed as living with them, as was Roy Spencer, widower of their daughter Lulu, and his sons Melvin and David.40
     Louisa and Orashio moved to Missouri between 1920 and 1925 as they do not appear in the 1925 Iowa census. They appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Nodaway Twp., Nodaway Co., Missouri, enumerated 3 Apr 1930, reporting that they were renting their home. Their son Jerome was listed as living with them, as was David Spencer, age 12, son of their late daughter Lulu.41
     Her husband died in 1932.42
     Louisa returned to the family home in Shenandoah after her husband's death.
     Almira appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 1110 West Thomas Ave., enumerated 17 Apr 1940, reporting that she owned a home valued at $1,000. Also listed as living with her is grandson, David Spencer. Her son Jerome and his wife Pauline are listed as living in the same dwelling, renting for $8 per month. All of them, except for Pauline, report they lived in the same house in 1935.43
     Almira died in 1950.15 She was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa.16
