Narrative:

     Alfred Gann was born about 1837 in Limestone Twp., Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania.6,7,8,9
     His mother died before 1840, when Alfred was under 3 years old.
     He was probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, John Gann Jr., in the 1840 Federal Census of Limestone Twp., Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania.15 He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Limestone Twp., Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania, in the household of his father and stepmother, Rachel Kauffman.16
     Alfred served in the Civil War, enrolling at Camp Custer 24 Oct 1862 in Co. D 177th Pennsylvania Drafted Military Infantry. According to his pension application years later, while in the line of duty at Deep Creek, Virginia on or about 15 Apr 1863 he contracted chronic diarrhea and piles and received medicine from the steward of the regimental hospital at Deep Creek for these diseases. While on the march with his Regiment at Maryland Heights, Maryland, about the 12th of July 1863 he received a sun-stroke which required him to leave the ranks and the next day he went with his Captain to Harper's Ferry and again received medicine from the steward for his complaints.17,18
     Alfred married Anna Jane Pursell, daughter of David W. Pursell and Mary Painter, on 16 Feb 1865 in Williamsport, Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania.10,11,12
     Alfred was named an heir in the will of John Gann Jr., his father, dated 28 Apr 1869 in Limestone Twp., Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania, to receive an equal share when his youngest sibling reached age 21, or at the death of the widow. It noted that he owed money his father, which if uncollected would be deducted from his share of the estate.3
     Alfred and Anna appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Collomsville, Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 30 Jul 1870, reporting real estate of $7,500 and personal estate of $1,000. Their children William and Mary were listed as living with them.2
     Alfred and Anna appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Limestone Twp., Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 11 Jun 1880. Their children Mary and Jennie were listed as living with them.19
     Alfred filed a Declaration for Original Invalid Pension 30 Jan 1886, stating his age as 49, and that he was a resident of Limestone Twp., Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania. It was attested to by J. B. McMicken and his brother William. Since leaving service he said he had resided in the City of Williamsport, Pennsylvania for 2 years (1863-1865) and the balance of the time in Limestone Twp. His pension was subsequently granted.20,21
     He was a farmer.2,19,22
     Alfred died on 4 Aug 1894 in Williamsport, Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania.10,13 He was buried in Wildwood Cemetery, Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania.14
