Narrative:

Edward Gapsch was born on 16 Dec 1886 in St. Louis, Missouri.8,9,10
He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Carondelet Twp., St. Louis Co., Missouri, in the household of his parents, Edward W. Gapsch and Sophie Herfurt.5
Edward moved to Washington before 1910, following his older brother, Robert. He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of La Center, Clark Co., Washington, in the household of Robert and his wife, Matilda Henriksdotter.17
On 22 Aug 1911 he purchased 40 acres about 3 miles northwest of La Center, Clark Co., Washington, from Addison and Cynthia Morey, for $700. There was apparently no direct access to the property, because he obtained, for $1 a 20-year, 16-foot, right of way from Frank and Emma Reigel, provided the gate at each end were to be kept closed. Emma was Edward's niece, daughter of his brother Robert.18,19 (See Map.) He sold that parcel to his brother Robert on 11 Jul 1914. The purchase price is listed as $10 and assumption of the outstanding $400 mortgage.20
While in Washington he evidently worked at a variety of jobs. On 25 Oct 1916, his foot was badly crushed when his horse slipped and fell at East Third and Oregon Sts., Portland, while working as a teamster for Frank Reigel, his neighbor and husband of his niece, Emma. He was taken to Police Emergency Hospital for treatment.21
Edward registered for the draft for World War I on 5 Jun 1917, while living at La Center, Washington, reporting he was employed as a logger by Star Mill Company, Battle Ground, Washington.2
Edward enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army in World War I on 7 Nov 1917.22,23,24 He was released from the service 22 May 1919.25
Edward returned to Missouri after the war. He has not been located in the 1920 census, so just when he returned is not known.
Edward married Caroline M. Barkhau, daughter of Benjamin F. Barkhau and Mary H. Pruetzel, on 21 Aug 1921 in Evangelical Church, Affton, St. Louis Co., Missouri.11,12
Edward and Caroline appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Carondelet Twp., St. Louis Co., Missouri, on Forman Rd., Affton, enumerated 22 Apr 1930, reporting they owned their home, and that the family had a radio. Their daughter Alvina was listed as living with them, Her parents apparently lived close by, as they are listed in the preceding household.26
Edward and Caroline appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Rock Twp., Jefferson Co., Missouri, enumerated 9 May 1940, reporting that they owned a farm valued at $500, and had lived in the same house in 1935. Their daughter Alvina was listed as living with them.27
Edward was a truck farmer after his return to Missouri.28,29 He registered for the draft for World War II on 27 Apr 1942, while living on Saline Rd., Jefferson Co., Missouri, reporting he was self-employed as a farmer.30 He reported in the 1950 census he had worked 70 hours the prior week.31
Edward and Caroline appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Rock Twp., Jefferson Co., Missouri, enumerated 30 May 1950, reporting they lived on a farm of over three acres. Their daughter Alvina was listed as living with them, as was her husband, James Lenord Myers, and their year-old daughter, Nancy.32 He applied for a Social Security Number 25 Jan 1955, while living in Fenton, Missouri, where he was a farmer.4
His wife died on 15 Jul 1973 in Fenton, St. Louis Co., Missouri.33,34
Edward died on 7 Nov 1979 in Fenton, St. Louis Co., Missouri, at age 92.13,14,15 He was buried on 9 Nov 1979 in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.16
