     Charles Frederick Shafer was born on 13 Apr 1883 in Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois.6,7,8,9
     His mother died on 24 Apr 1899, when Charles was 16 years old.18 He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Chatsworth Twp., Livingston Co., Illinois, in the household of his father, Adam Shafer.4
     Charles graduated from Northwestern Business College, Naperville, Illinois, in 1909.19
     Charles married Nellie May Glabe, daughter of Sebastian Glabe and Anna Katherine Ruppel, on 2 Jun 1909 in Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois, with Rev. M. Gronewold officating.10,11
     Charles and Nellie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois, enumerated 23 Apr 1910, apparently boarding in the home of Louis Walter and his wife Christina.20
     Charles registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living in Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois, reporting he was employed by the Farmers State Bank of Fairbury, in Fairbury, Illinois.1
     Charles and Nellie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois, on Oak St., enumerated 14 Jan 1920, reporting that they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Elma, Ronald, Faye and Arlene were listed as living with them. They were apparently living near her parents and their other children, as they are listed as the second previous household, on 6th St.21
     Charles and Nellie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois, enumerated 15 Apr 1930, reporting they owned a home valued at $6,500, and did not own a radio. Their children Elma, Ronald, Faye and Arlene were listed as living with them.20
     Charles and Nellie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois, enumerated 25 Apr 1940, reporting that they owned a home valued at $2,500. Their children Faye and Arlene were listed as living with them. They reported they had lived in the same house in 1935.22
     He was a clerk in a bank when he married. By 1920 he was and insurance salesman. By 1930 he was an insurance agent.23,24,21,25 Nellie joined Charles as a partner in his business, Shafer's Insurance Agency, about 1933. In 1940 they both reported their occupations as insurance salesman, and that each had worked 40 hours the last week of March and 52 weeks the prior years.22,26,27
     Charles registered for the draft for World War II on 27 Apr 1942, while living in Chatsworth Twp., Livingston Co., Illinois, reporting he was self employed.28
     Charles served on the village board and a water commissioner at the time of his death.19
     Charles died on 10 May 1944 in Bloomington, McLean Co., Illinois, at age 61.12,13,14 He was buried on 12 May 1944 in Chatsworth Cemetery, Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois.15,16,17
