Narrative:

     Ida May Reigel was born on 21 Oct 1884, probably in Craig, Holt Co., Missouri, although it is possible her mother returned to Williamsport, Pennsylvania for her birth. Each place is shown in several records.7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16
     She moved to Kansas with her parents about 1885.19 She appeared on the 1885 State Census of Kirwin, Phillips Co., Kansas, in the household of her parents, Benjamin Franklin Riegel and Esther Matilda Gann.20
     She moved to Clark Co., Washington Territory, with her parents about 1892.21,22,23 She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of La Center, Clark Co., Washington, in the household of her parents.24
     Evidently the Reigels in the Pacific Northwest maintained contact with their Gapsch cousins in Missouri. On 11 Jun 1909 the regular feature of a Portland, Oregon, newspaper listing those registered in the local hotels noted that "Mrs. J. F. Imel, St. Joseph, Mo." and "Miss Ida Reigel, LaCenter, Wash." were registered a the Nortonla Hotel.25
     She was a teacher in the public schools in Stevenson, Washington, in 1910.26,27 She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Stevenson, Skamania Co., Washington, on First St., enumerated 7 May 1910, living as boarder, along with three other teachers and two others, in the household of Willard C. Udell, his wife, and their eight-year-old daughter.28
     She was elected as a teacher in the Vancouver, Washington, city schools in May 1911.29
     Ella Reigel recalled a story that Ida changed the record of her birth date in the family Bible to make her appear younger when she married. She also recalls a story that Ida "married money."30
     Ida married Austin Willard Angell, son of Charles Edgar Angell and Imogene Hall Cummings, on 12 Oct 1913 in La Center, Clark Co., Washington, at the home of her parents, with R. Raudstrin, Luthran minister, officiating.17,18
     She loaned her brother, Frank, and his wife, Emma $200, at 10% interest, and secured by the 21-acre parcel at the rear of his farm, 23 Apr 1915. The mortgage was satisfied 17 Apr 1918.31
     Ida and Austin lived in St. Clair Apartments, in Portland, Oregon after their marriage.32,33 By 1916 they had moved to 386 E 55th N.34 They appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, at 386 E 55 N, enumerated 10 Jan 1920, reporting that they owned their home, which was mortgaged. Their son Austin was listed as living with them.35
     Ida and Austin appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, at 386 E 55th N, enumerated 7 Apr 1930, reporting that the family owned its own home, and did not have a radio. Their children Austin and Norman were listed as living with them.36
     By 1931 they had moved to 3028 North East Brazee St.37
     Ida inherited, with her siblings, their parents' 20 acre farm. On 24 Oct 1931 she, Ralph, and Forest ceded to Frank the five acres nearest his farm. In 1938 and 1939 the three brothers transferred their interests in the remaining 15 acres to Ida.38,39 Ida sold the 15 acres to John and Bertha M. Kapus on 28 Dec 1939.40
     Ida and Austin appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, at 3028 NE Brazee, enumerated 17 Apr 1940, reporting that they owned a home valued at $7,500, and had lived in the same city in 1935. Their son Norman was listed as living with them.41
     It seems likely that Norman's parents did not travel to Florida for his wedding in Jun 1942 given war-time travel restrictions. Ida did host a tea for his bride when she was in Portland briefly in August before joining him in Alamogoro, New Mexico.42
     Ida and Austin appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, at 3028 NE Brazee, enumerated 15 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm.43
     Ida and Austin moved to California about 1950.44,45 They were living at 15968 Cherry Blossom Ln., Los Gatos, by 1956.46 They were living in 949 Menlo Ave., Menlo Park, San Mateo, California, by 1959.47,48,6
     During this time her nephew, Vernon Howard Reigel and his family visited them there occasionally. On one occasion, they dropped in and Aunt Ida said she would invite them for dinner but she was expecting guests. She did offer ice cream with maple syrup on it, which impressed Carmen. Carmen recalls Ida as a very "proper" lady.49
     Ida died on 18 Dec 1963 in Palo Alto, Santa Clara Co., California, at age 79.6 She was buried on 23 Dec 1963 in Lincoln Memorial Park, Portland, Oregon.6
