     Simon W. Bruner was born on 3 Jun 1846 in Indiana.7,8,9
     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Clifty Twp., Bartholomew Co., Indiana, in the household of his parents, Benjamin H. Bruner and Eleanor Smith.15 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Willow Hill Twp., Jasper Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents.16
     He moved to Illinois with his parents by 1860.
     Simon enlisted in Co. K, 32nd Illinois U.S. Infantry, as a private 14 Mar 1865, at Olney, Illinois.17,18,19
     The regiment had been formed 31 Dec 1861, and had been engaged in many actions prior to Simon's enlistment. On 21 Mar 1865 it was engaged at Bentonville, North Carolina, with heavy losses, but whether he had arrived then is unknown. It remained in North Carolina until the 29th, when it marched through Virginia to Washington, where it participated in the grand review 24 May. On 6 Jun it moved by rail to Parkersburg, Virginia, then by boat to Louisville, Kentucky. The brigade, including the 32nd, was transferred to the Department of the Missouri and moved by boat to St. Louis. From there it was dispatched to the far west via Fort Leavenworth. After marching to Fort Kearney, Nebraska, orders to muster out were received. It reached Fort Leavenworth 2 Sep.20
     Simon was mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 16 Sep 1865, with his regiment.21
     He was a farmer after the war.22,23
     Simon married Elizabeth Cobb Terhune, daughter of James B. Terhune and Martha M. Cobb, on 18 Mar 1868 in Jasper Co., Illinois.10,11,12
     Simon and Elizabeth settled in Illinois after their marriage. They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Willow Hill Twp., Jasper Co., Illinois, enumerated 21 Jul 1870, reporting no real or personal estate. Their son Melvin was listed as living with them.24
     Simon and Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Willow Hill Twp., Jasper Co., Illinois, enumerated 11 Jun 1880. Their children Melvin, Arthur, Alfred and Harry were listed as living with them, as was his father.6
     Simon applied for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service on 3 Aug 1888, which was subsequently approved.25
     Simon died on 4 Jan 1894 at age 47.9,13 He was buried in Mound Cemetery, Hunt City, Jasper Co., Illinois.14

Simon and Elizabeth had three other children, who died before 1900. It seems likely they are the three buried near his mother in Mound Cemetery, Hunt City, Jasper Co., Illinois: Tell, born about 29 May 1874 and died 7 Sep 1875; Martha, born 6 Apr 1881 and died 2 Aug 1881; and May, died 6 Sep 188? age 4 months 9 days.31,32,33
