Narrative:

Joseph B. Pellens was born on 11 Jan 1851 in Cincinnati, Ohio.7,8,9
He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, in the household of his parents, George William Pellens and Louise Darmhouse.17
Joseph moved to Seymour, Indiana, by 1870, apparently following his older brother Adolphus, who had moved there in 1864.18 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana, in the household of his brother Adolphus and his wife, Frederica J. Turcke. His occupation was listed as clerk in a drug store, presumably his brother's store.19
Joseph was named an heir in the will of his father dated 5 Dec 1873 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, to receive an equal share with his four brothers of the estate.5
Joseph moved to Rochester, Indiana, by 1880. He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Rochester, Fulton Co., Indiana, on Main Street, enumerated 7 Jun 1880.20
He was a druggist in Rochester.21,22
Joseph married Nancy E. Cobb, daughter of Elkanah Cobb and Sarah Jane Youtsey, on 10 May 1881 at her father's residence one mile west of Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana, with Rev. Albert Ogle offciating.10,11,12
Joseph and Nancy settled in Rochester after their marriage.23 They moved to Fort Wayne about 1890.24
In Fort Wayne he joined with William O. Gross in a firm known as Gross & Pellens, who were druggists and dealers in barbers' supplies, at 94 Calhoun. Gross had previously operated a similiar business under the name of Thieme & Gross at the same address, with Theodore F. Thieme. By 1900 Joseph was operating the business with a new partner, Arwid Polster, and the firm was called Pellens & Polster. It was at the same address, but the buildings had been re-numbered and it was know known as 902 Calhoun. By 1904 he had a new partner, James D. Lewis, and the firm was called Pellens & Lewis.25,26
Joseph and Nancy appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Wayne Twp., Allen Co., Indiana, at 164 East Berry, enumerated 1 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Myra, Louise and Elliott were listed as living with them.27
His firm was dissolved by 1907. Joseph continued to call himself a druggist in the city directory, and on the 1910 census, but it appears he was not actually in business. He is listed in the 1909 city directory as a stockkeeper for W. K. Mills, but with no apparent occupation after that.28,29,30
Joseph and Nancy appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana, at 578 Berry St. East, enumerated 15 Apr 1910, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Myra, Louise and Elliott were listed as living with them.31
Joseph and Nancy moved to Montana about 1910.32 They appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Lolo, Missoula Co., Montana, enumerated 25 Feb 1920, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their son Elliott was listed as living with them.33
Joseph died on 4 Jul 1926 in Lolo, Missoula Co., Montana, at age 75.13,14 He was buried on 6 Jul 1926 in Riverview Cemetery, Seymour, Jackson Co., Indiana.15,16
