Narrative:

     Alta Griswold Cobb was born on 5 Aug 1819 in Pawlet, Vermont.4,5,6
     She was probably one of the three females under age 10 listed in the household of her father, Joshua D. Cobb, in the 1820 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont.13 She was probably the female age 10 to 15 listed in the household of her fathe in the 1830 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont.14
     Alta married Frederick William Howe, son of Daniel Howe and Sally Blunt, on 1 Sep 1838 in Pawlet, Vermont.7,8,9
     Alta and Frederick moved to Dunton, now part of Arlington Heights, Cook Co., Illinois, before 1840, when their first child was born there. They lived there until at least 1851 when their fourth child was born there, but they have not been found in the 1840 or 1850 censuses.
     They moved about 25 miles north-west by 1860, to McHenry Co. Alta and Frederick appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Nunda, McHenry Co., Illinois, enumerated 18 Jun 1860, reporting no real estate, but $300 in personal estate. Their children Desdamonia, Henry, Julia and Sheldon were listed as living with them, as were Jeremiah Green, a farm laborer, Hellen Mecker, and apparently her son, Herman, age 9.15
     Her husband died on 27 Jan 1861 in Crystal Lake, McHenry Co., Illinois.16,17
     After his death Alta moved 20 miles south, to Kane Co. She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Elgin, Kane Co., Illinois, enumerated 20 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $2,000 and personal estate of $1,400. Her children Henry and Julia were listed as living with her, as were Henry's wife Lydia C. Kelley, Julia's husband, Homer Sheldon, Charlotte Howe, age 19, relationship unknown, and William and Dellia Salsberry.18
     By 1880 Alta moved back to McHenry Co., where her daughter Julia was living. Alta appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Jackson St., Woodstock, McHenry Co., Illinois, in the household of her daughter Julia. Her daughter Desdamonia and her husband and daughter were also listed in the household.19
     Alta died on 15 Mar 1888 in Woodstock, McHenry Co., Illinois, at age 68.10,11 She was buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery, now known as the Lake Avenue Cemetery, Crystal Lake, McHenry Co., Illinois.12
