Narrative:

     Gilbert Bolton was born on 8 Jan 1914 in Big Ready, Butler Co., Kentucky.7,8,9 He appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Sulphur Springs, Edmonson Co., Kentucky, in the household of his parents, Kelley Bolton and Eulah M. Renfrow.2
     He moved to Iowa with his parents about 1921. He appeared on the 1925 State Census of Monroe, Fremont Co., Iowa, in the household of his parents.5
     He moved to Missouri with his parents about 1926. He appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Jefferson Twp., Johnson Co., Missouri, in the household of his parents.6 He returned to Iowa with his parents about 1931.
     He began working for his father's brother Tuck, near Strahan, Iowa, in Apr 1935. He later went further afield in search of work, apparently on a temporary basis. In Jul 1939 he left "for the harvest fields" of South Dakota.16,17
     He appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Monroe Twp., Fremont Co., Iowa, in the household of his parents.18
     He was a labor at a nursery in 1940, reporting he had worked 18 hours the last week of March, and 32 weeks the prior year, earning $375.18 He substituted for the regular rural mail carried during Dec 1940 and Jan 1941.19
     Gilbert married Bertha Jennie Morris, daughter of Edgar Lafeyette Morris and Lola L. Knisley, about 1941.10,11,12
     Gilbert served in the U. S. Army in World War II, entering service 23 Apr 1941 at Omaha, Nebraska, as a private. He was initially stationed in California, and was able to return home to visit family in Sep 1942.20,21 He was a technical sergeant at Camp VaN Nuy, California, then promoted to staff sergeant in early 1943 and moved to Camp San Luis Obispo. There he served as Motor Sergeant in the 35th Quartermaster Co.22,23 He was sent overseas on 12 May 1944 with the 448th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, which saw action in the European theater. He returned to the U.S. 27 Jun 1945, and was discharged 1 Aug 1945.20
     On 29 Aug 1949 Gilbert filed a claim with Iowa's World War II Service Compensation Board based on his military service. He reported he was then living at 1109 W. Valley, Shenandoah, Iowa, and had been living in Beaconsfield, Iowa, at the time he entered the service. His claim was approved and he received $500.20
     He was a mechanic at a farm equipment and GMC truck dealer, reporting in the 1950 census he had worked 54 hours the prior week by 1950.24
     Gilbert and Bertha appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 1109 Valley, enumerated 6 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm. Their three children were listed as living with them.25
     Gilbert and Bertha moved to Omaha, Nebraska, by 1953 when they were living at 4920½ S. 23rd St.26 They moved to 5005 S. 23rd St. by 1954.27 They moved to 6231 Karen by 195628 and two years later they moved to 1314 Missouri Ave.29
     He was a mechanic in Omaha. By 1955 he was working for Watson Brothers, a van line and heavy hauling company in Omaha.30
     Gilbert died in Jan 1977.13,14 He was buried on 3 Feb 1977 in Hillcrest Memorial Park.15
