     Mary Edith Morrison was born on 1 Feb 1880 in La Porte, La Porte Co., Indiana.8,9,10 She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of La Porte, La Porte Co., Indiana, in the household of her parents, Henry D. Morrison and Mary Naomi Ridgeway.4 She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of La Porte, La Porte Co., Indiana, in the household of her parents, at 1213 Michigan Ave.5
     She generally used her middle name, Edith, as an adult.16,17,1 She was a graduate of Dr. Graham Taylor's class in social welfare in Chicago.14
     Mary applied for a U.S. passport on 18 Jan 1911 while in Berlin. She said she had left the U.S. on 6 Dec 1910 and was planning to stay abroad for an indefinite period before returning.1
     She was described as "wealthy and a prominent Laporte society and philanthropic woman" in accounts of her death.18
     Mary married Edwin Willard Schurz, son of Frederick J. Shurtz and Sarah Elizabeth Riegel, on 17 Jan 1913 in La Porte Co., Indiana.11,12,13
     On 18 Oct 1913, nine months after their marriage, Edith and three other women were riding in an automobile driven by her husband, Edwin Willard Schurz, when it was stuck by a train, fatally injuring her and the other three women, and seriously injuring her husband. The other women, all society leaders, were Fannie P. Heinze, former wife of Prof. Victor Heinze of Berlin; Mrs. Carleton Shafer, who was prominent in literary circles and widow of an Indiana lawyer; and Mrs. William Brace, wife of a Washington DC druggist.19,14
     Mary died on 18 Oct 1913 in La Porte, Indiana, at age 33.14,15
