     Bessie Louise Rice was born on 11 Jul 1880 in Illinois.7,8,9
     She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Ayers Twp., Champaign Co., Illinois, in the household of her parents, John Logan Rice and Elizabeth DeVour.4
     Bessie married David H. Broyles, son of Marion Broyles and Elizabeth J. Copp, on 15 Mar 1902 in Allerton, Illinois.10,11,12
     Bessie and David appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Washington Co., Tennessee, enumerated 20 Apr 1910, They report that they owned their farm though they are listed as living in the same dwelling as Jane E. Copp, a 66-year old widow who also reports owning her farm. Their children Dorothy, Clifford and Violet were listed as living with them, They seem to have been surrounded by relatives. In addition to Jane Copp, adjacent households include Jacob F. Copp, age 59, and his family, Bruce B. Copp, age 32, and his family, and Harvey Broyles, age 60, and his family.15
     They evidently lived in California for a time as their daughter Gertrude is listed in various sources as being born there in 1911. But no other record of them in that state has been found. By 1925 they had moved to Iowa.
     Bessie and David appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 107 S. Center Ave., enumerated 10 Jan 1920, reporting that they were renting their home. Their children Dorothy, Clifford, Violet, Gertrude and Woodrow were listed as living with them.16
     Bessie and David appeared on the 1925 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 310 South Ave., reporting that they rented their home for $15 per month. Their children Clifford, Violet, Gertrude, Woodrow and Paul were listed as living with them, as was Sebe Boyles, a 25-year old nephew.16
     Bessie and David appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 301 Rankin Ct., enumerated 12 Apr 1930, reporting that they were renting their home, for $25 per month. Their children Violet and Gertrude were listed as living with them.16 Their two younger sons, Woodrow, age 13, and Paul, age 9, were living with their eldest daughter, Dorothy, and her husband, Warren Van Duzer.17
     Bessie and David appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 301 South Elm St., enumerated 6 Apr 1940, reporting that they were renting their home, for $10 per month. Their son Paul was listed as living with them.18
     She was a dishwasher in a restaurant for many years. In 1940 she was working at Cliff's Cafe but reported that she had not worked the prior year.19,20,21
     Her husband died on 28 Sep 1946 in Iowa City, Johnson Co., Iowa.22
     Bessie appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 1003 8th Ave., enumerated 10 Apr 1950, reporting she lived in a home that was not on a farm, reporting she had received $400 in interest, pensions, etc. the prior year.23
     Bessie died on 5 Jun 1963 in Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at age 82.13 She was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa.14
