Mark Eischeid was born on 6 Jan 1900 in Iowa.8,9,10 He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, in the household of his parents, John H. Eischeid and Elenora Shurtz.2 He appeared on the 1905 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, in the household of his parents.16,17,3 He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, in the household of his parents.7 He appeared on the 1915 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, apparently in the household of his parents.18,19,20,21
Mark registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living at 512 7th Ave., Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, reporting he was employed as a clerk by Economy Hog & Cattle Powder Co.22
He appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, in the household of his parents.23 He appeared on the 1925 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, in the household of his father, at 706 7th Ave.24 He appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, in the household of his father, at 706 7th Ave.25
Mark's father was disabled during the last years of his life and Mark provided care for him. As a result he declined to marry while his father was still living, but he was married a few months after his father's death in Jun 1939.26
Mark married Gertrude Thelma Broyles, daughter of David H. Broyles and Bessie Louise Rice, on 23 Aug 1939.11,12,13
Mark and Gertrude appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 706 7th Ave., enumerated 15 Apr 1940, reporting that they owned a home valued at $5,000, that he had lived in the same house in 1935, and she had lived in the same county.27
Mark was named an heir in the will of Harry T. Shurtz, his mother's brother, who died 15 Sep 1941, under which a trust was established to contain all of the estate and Mark was to be trustee. Income from the trust was to pay $50 per month to the widow, and the remainder to be paid equally to him and his sister Sarah. At the death of the widow Mark and his sister were each to receive one third of the estate, with the remaining third to go to the widow's two daughters. However she elected instead to received instead the one-third widow's share of the estate and forgo the income offered.28 Disputes over adjusting for the reduced size of the trust resulted in litigation with the two step-daughters which ended up in the state Supreme Court, which finally decided the case 18 Oct 1949.28
A separate case arose around the treatment of certain expenditures by Mark as the trustee. He said they should be charged to the principal of the trust, thus reducing the amounts ultimately distributed to all, while the step-daughters claimed they should be charged to income, reducing the payments to Mark and his sister during the life of the trust. This case also reached the state Supreme Court, which decided it 6 Mar 1951, agreeing with him on some expenditures and not on others.29
Mark was bookkeeper for a stock powder company until 1930, then held a similar position with Shenandoah Hatchery, owned by his uncle Harry T. Shurtz.30,31,32
Mark and Gertrude lived in Omaha, Nebraska, at 4902 Capital Ave., in 1941 while he attended Creighton University. He took classes there in bookkeeping and accounting.33,34,35
After their return to Shenandoah Mark worked as a bookkeeper or accountant for a number of local firms.26 He worked for a time as chief clerk for the west Page Co. rationing office. In Nov 1943 he resigned along with two of his clerks, requiring the office to close for two days while someone from Omaha traveled there to take charge. The reason for the sudden resignations has not been learned.36,37
He returned to accounting by 1950, when he was working for a retail seed and nursery, reporting in the 1950 census he had worked 40 hours the prior week.38
Mark and Gertrude appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 706 Seventh Ave., enumerated 7 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm. Their two eldest children were listed as living with them.39
Mark died on 3 Jul 1957 in Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at age 57.14 He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa.15
