     Herschell Johnson Smith was born on 28 Jan 1900 in Louisville, Kentucky.9,10,11
     He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, in the household of his parents, Herschell Porter Smith and Corinne Acklin Tuck.4 He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, in the household of his parents.5
     Herschell served in World War I, enlisting 6 Apr 1917 and becoming a private 1st class in Co. G, 113th Ammunition Train, Kentucky National Guard. The unit was drafted into Federal service 5 Aug 1917.3
     He is listed twice in the 1919 Louisville city directory, once at his father's address, 1247 S. Brook, and also at 238 E. Madison. In both listings his occupation is shown as U.S. Army. He has not been found in the 1920 census.13
     Herschell married, and later divorced according to his death certificate, but no details have been found.12
     Herschell has not been found again in the city directories until 1929, when he was living at 1029 Barret Ave., Louisville. No occupation is listed for him. He was not listed at that address in the 1930 census, nor has he been found elsewhere.14
     Herschell was living at the workhouse in Louisville, Kentucky, at the time of his death. He was unemployed and suffering from chronic alcoholism.6
     Herschell died on 1 Oct 1932 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at age 32.6 He was buried on 2 Oct 1932 in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky.6
