Narrative:

William Edzard Sublett was born on 4 Jul 1812 in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.6,7,8
William married first Mary Elizabeth Cook, daughter of William Cook and Elizabeth Rose.9,10
William appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Hickman Co., Kentucky, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 to 20 (son William), one age 20 to 30 (himself), one female under age 5 (daughter Orilla), and one age 20 to 30 (wife Mary). There were also two female slaves, one under age 10 and one age 16 to 24.17
William and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Hickman Co., Kentucky, enumerated 21 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $500, and living in a hotel, apparently one they operated. Their children William, Orilla, A. and Anna were listed as living with them, as were five men, two merchants, two clerks, and a pedlar, apparently residents at the hotel, and three slaves.18,19
His wife died on 10 Mar 1854.20,21,22,23
William appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Columbus, Hickman Co., Kentucky, enumerated 5 Jul 1860, reporting real estate valued at $6,000 and personal estate of $2,000, and one slave. He was apparently living close by the household of Elizabeth Cook, his mother-in-law, where his children were living.24,25
William married second Ellen Trowbridge, daughter of Jacob Trowbridge and Sarah Shepard.11,12
William and Ellen appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Columbus, Hickman Co., Kentucky, enumerated 8 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $8,000 and personal estate of $2,000. Her daughter Okella Kimbel by a prior marriage was listed as living with them, as was Richard Smith, a 16-year old grocery clerk, presumably in William's store.26
William and Ellen were apparently separated or divorced before 1880, as they appear separately in the 1880 census in the households of their respective daughters, each shown as widowed.27,28
He was a grocer in Columbus, Kentucky, for many years. He retired before 1880 and moved to Tennessee.2,3,26,29 William appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., Tennessee, in the household of his daughter Anna and her husband, Edward F. Sesson.30
William died on 16 Dec 1891 in St. Elmo, Tennessee, at age 79.13,7,14 He was buried in Columbus Cemetery, Columbus, Hickman Co., Kentucky, with his first wife.15,16
