Narrative:

Maria Louis Toot was born on 11 Jun 1847 in Halifax Co., Virginia.7,8,9
She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her parents, Melcajah Rhum Toot and Mariah Louis Smith.13,14 She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her parents.15,16
Maria appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of William T. Ballow Jr. and Sallie King Toot, her sister and brother-in-law.17
Maria appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Main St., Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, in the household of David Ayres and Sally King Davis, her cousin and her husband.18
Maria married Rev. Wellington Edwin Webb, son of John David Webb and Harriett Beard, on 12 Feb 1890 in Danville, Virginia.10,11,12
Her husband died on 1 Apr 1890 in Halifax Co., Virginia.19,20,21
Maria has not been found in the 1900, 1910, 1920, or 1930 censuses, all of which she would be expected to appear in. Perhaps the reason is that she had no permanent home, but spent extended periods with various nieces. By the mid-1920's, if not long before, she was alternating between two of her sister Sally's daughters, Susan C. Ballou in Atlanta in the winter, and Sallie A. Ballou in Halifax in the summer. In between she also visited another daughter of Sally, Mary Ayers Ballow, in Charlottesville, and two daughters of her brother Malacjah, Katherine and Martha Lewis Toot, in Danville.22,23,24
In Jun 1934 Maria fell and broke her hip while staying with Sallie in Halifax, and thereafter was reported to be "making her home at Danville General Hospital," where she died a year and a half later.25,26
Maria died on 14 Dec 1935 in Danville, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, at age 88.6 She was buried on 14 Dec 1935 in South Boston, Virginia.6
