Henry P. White was born about May 1869 in Todd Co., Kentucky.5,6,7 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Elkton, Todd Co., Kentucky, in the household of his parents, William Tillman White and Modena A. Clark.1
His father died in Apr 1880, when Henry was about 11 years old.8,9 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Trenton, Todd Co., Kentucky, in the household of his mother.2
Henry was listed as working on his mother's the farm in 1880 census, after the death of his father.2 He later became a railroad brakeman. His early career has not been traced, but by 1897 he was living in Evansville, Indiana, living with his sister Martha at 1104 6th St.10,11
Henry enlisted in the U.S. Army 25 Jun 1898 in St. Louis, Missouri. He served in the 6th Artillery, Co. E. He was discharged 19 Jan 1899 in Washington, District of Columbia, as a private.12,13
Henry enlisted again 3 Jun 1899 in Evansville, Indiana. He served again in the 6th Artillery, now in Co. M. With the re-organization of Army artillery in 1901 he became part of the 63rd Co., U.S. Coastal Artillery. He was discharged for disability 31 May 1902 on Alcatraz Island, California, as a mechanic.14,15
Henry filed an application for an invalid pension based on his military service 13 Jun 1902 while living in Indiana. A pension of $14 per month was subsequently approved.16,17
He was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Johnson City, Washington Co., Tennessee, on 29 Nov 1902 because of his disability, which was listed as chronic gastritis, old injury to left foot with deformity, and history of malaria. He was discharged 24 Jan 1904, returned 15 Jun 1904 staying until 31 Dec 1912. He was re-admitted 16 Mar 1913, staying until his death.18
While the records of the Home indicate he was a patient there more or less continually, he apparently spent time intermittently at his sister's home in Evansville, where his mother was also living until her death. He appears in the 1905 and 1906 city directories there.19 He also appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., Indiana, in the household of his sister Martha, and her husband, James Young Cabaniss.20
