Narrative:

James Harvey Maxwell was born on 12 Aug 1822 in Caldwell Co., Kentucky.4,5,6
James appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 29 Aug 1850, in the household of Dr. Thomas B. and Mary Johnson, apparently as a boarder.11
James married Mary Marie Cole, daughter of Wilson Cole and Polly Fuller, on 7 Nov 1851.7,8
James and Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Fredonia, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 9 Aug 1860, reporting real estate valued at $10,700 and personal estate of $11,200. Their children Warren, Fuller, Carrie and Herbert were listed as living with them, as were Jacob and John Myers, age 3 and 4 months, respectively, who appear to be the two youngest children of Dr. F. C. and Louiza Myers, the family listed previously in the record. There are also eight slaves listed, ranging in age from 3 to 75.12,13
James and Mary moved to Illinois between 1864 and 1870. They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of De Soto, Jackson Co., Illinois, enumerated 4 Aug 1870, reporting real estate valued at $3,000 and personal estate of $6,000. Their children Warren, Fuller, Carrie, Herbert, Frank and Nellie were listed as living with them.14
James and Mary returned to Kentucky between 1870 and 1880. They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Fredonia, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 23 Jun 1880. Their children Fuller, Carrie and Nellie were listed as living with them.15
He was a merchant in 1850. He considered himself a farmer by 1860, reported himself as retired in 1870, but by 1880 he was working as a dry goods clerk.16,17,18,19
James and Mary moved to Alabama after 1880. Their sons and daughter Nellie also moved there. It seems most likely that at least some of their sons moved there first and the parents and younger children followed.
James died on 2 Feb 1884 at age 61.9 He was buried in Oakland Cemetery, De Valls Bluff, Prairie Co., Arkansas.10
