Narrative:

     Willard Burr Cobb was born on 19 Jan 1807 in Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont.6
     He was probably the male under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Capt. Willard Cobb, in the 1810 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont.11 He was probably the male age 10 to 16 listed in the household of his father, Capt. Willard Cobb, in the 1820 Federal Census of Wells, Rutland Co., Vermont.12
     He moved to Indiana with his parents about 1827.13 He was probably the male age 20 to 30 listed in the household of his father in the 1830 Federal Census of Decatur Co., Indiana.14
     Willard married Submit S. Garlinghouse, daughter of John Garlinghouse and Lewanna [surname unknown], on 19 Sep 1830 in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana, with Levi Thornton, justice of the peace, officiating.7
     On 15 Mar 1837 Willard was granted a patent for 40 acres of land in Shelby Co., Indiana, under the Cash Entry Act of April 24,1820. That act reduced the minimum price of public land to $1.25 per acre, and the minimum purchase to 80 acres, but required payment in cash, not on credit. His tract was described as the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section 24, twp. 14 north, range 5 east.15
     Willard appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Decatur Co., Indiana, with a household consisting of one male age 30 to 40 (himself), and one female under age 5 (daughter Paulina), two age 5 to 10 (Sophronia and Sarah), and one age 20 to 30 (wife Submit.)3
     He was a farmer.16 He was seems to have been willing to try new approaches. There were attempts made to establish a silk industry in the county. In 1842 he cultivated 4,000 mulberry trees for the fledgling industry, but ended up selling them for $20 per thousand as shade trees in 1842.17
     Willard died on 6 Sep 1849 in Decatur Co., Indiana, at age 42, of cholera.8,9 He was buried in Sand Creek Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur Co., Indiana.10
