Ellen A. Marshall was born about 1839 in Kentucky.5,6,7,8 She married first Samuel R. Burks on 7 Feb 1860 in Crittenden Co., Kentucky.2,9,10 She married second J. W. Fox on 16 Nov 1879 in Crittenden Co., Kentucky.11,12
She was probably the female under age 5 listed in the household of her father, George M. Marshall, in the 1840 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., Kentucky.13 She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of District No. 1, Crittenden Co., Kentucky, in the household of her parents, George M. Marshall and Persis Clark Cobb.3,14 Ellen and Samuel R. Burks appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Dycusburg, Crittenden Co., Kentucky, enumerated 13 Jul 1860, in the household of William E. Dyens and his family, another carpenter. He reported personal estate of $500.15
On 16 Aug 1851 her mother's brother, Gideon Dyer Cobb Jr., gave a 185-acre parcel to her and all her children.16 She and Samuel R. Burks appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dycusburg, Crittenden Co., Kentucky, enumerated 2 Aug 1870, reporting real estate valued at $700. Their children Charles, Minnie and Samuel were listed as living with them, as was Betha Simmons, age 23, relationship unknown. They were apparently living near her brother Henry and his family, as they are listed next in the record.17
Ellen and J. W. Fox appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dycusburg, Crittenden Co., Kentucky, enumerated 10 Jun 1880. His son Charles by his previous marriage, and her children by her previous marriage, Charles, Minnie, Samuel, Walter and Oscar, were listed as living with them.18
