Norman graduated from Grant high school and attended three years at the University of Oregon.6
Norman enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 27 Sep 1941 in Portland, Oregon, as an aviation cadet.3 After basic training at Merced and Victorville, California, he took primary air training at Visalia. He graduated from the advanced flying school at Luke field in Arizona on 24 Apr 1942, and was commissioned as second lieutenant in the air corps. He was then ordered to Tallahassee, Florida for further instruction.16
