Narrative:

     Kilyan Dunkle was born on 6 Sep 1805 in Pennsylvania.5,6,7 He moved to Northumberland Co. about 1835 with his parents.4
     Kilyan married Mary Slote, daughter of James Slote, in Mar 1836.6,8,9
     Kilyan and his wife and son moved for a time to Limestone Twp., Columbia Co., now in Montour Co. Kilyan appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Limestone Twp., Columbia Co., Pennsylvania, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 (son Hiram), and one age 30 to 40 (himself), and one female age 20 to 30 (wife Mary Slote.)12
     By 1850 they had returned to Northumberland Co. Kilyan and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Turbut Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 12 Aug 1850. Their son Hiram was listed as living with them, as was Elizabeth Frankenfield, age 15.1
     Kilyan and Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Milton, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 27 Jul 1860, reporting real estate valued at $15,000 and personal estate of $6,000. Sarah Wolizer, a 20-year-old domestic, and Benjamin Franklin Riegel were listed as living with them. Their son Hiram and his family was apparently living close by, as they are listed next.13
     Kilyan and Mary appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Turbut Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 11 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $19,000 and personal estate of $1,200. Their son Hiram and his family were apparently living close by, as they are listed as the preceding household.14
     He was a farmer, owning and cultivating a farm near Muddy Run, in Turbut Twp.4,15,1,13,14
     Kilyan left a will dated 11 Sep 1875, in which he named his wife Mary and son Hiram as executors. He left to his wife all his household furniture, horse, harness, buggy, and all the cash on hand. Also, she was to receive during her natural life all the income from all his personal property, stocks, notes, and bonds, and the interest on $7,000 to be paid by his son or any succeeding owner of his farm. He specified that should she choose to live alone a sum from his personal property sufficient to buy a suitable dwelling for her use be provided. He bequeathed to his son, subject to the interest payments to his wife, his 150-acre farm then occupied by Messrs. Eshback. At the death of his wife all the property set aside her for use during her life was to go to Hiram, or if he was not living, to his five children who were listed by name.16
     He amended his will with a codicil dated 29 Apr 1876, in which he noted that he had sold his farm, and his wife was to receive for her life the income from all unpaid payments from the farm, in addition to the interest on her $7,000 dowry.17
     The last two years of his life he lived with his son Hiram, in Delaware Twp.4
     Kilyan died on 2 Mar 1878 at age 72.10,5,4 He was buried in Paradise Reformed Lutheran Church Cemetery, Lewis Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania.4,11
     His will was proved on 11 Mar 1878 in Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania. Hiram was granted Letters Testamentary to act as sole executor after his mother renounced her nomination.16
