Narrative:

James Augustus Lathrop was born on 30 Sep 1826 in Burlington, Vermont.5,6 He was probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, John Lathrop, in the 1830 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont.8
After his father died when he was ten, he lived with an uncle in Middlebury, Vermont, for three years, then struck out on his own.4
James moved to Fond du Lac Co., Wisconsin, in 1850 working as a carpenter and joiner, then worked as a millwright until 1855. At that time he bought land in Wanpaca Co., Wisconsin, and built a saw mill on it, followed by a grist mill. In 1859 he bought out his partner, and sold one-fourth interest to his brother-in-law, William West.9
James married first Rebecca Atkinson in Jun 1855.7
James moved to Rock Grove, Iowa, in 1861.7
     His wife died in 1865.7
He erected Rock Grove mill in 1867 and 1868. It was water-powered, with a capacity of 75 barrels of flour a day.10
James married second Jennie Capen in 1868.7 He bought a half interest in the Nora Springs Foundry and Machine Shop from George Briggs in 1881. After Briggs died in Jun 1882 James rented his interest, and then operated the mill in his own name, making castings for mill repairs, machinery, horse powers, anvils, farm boilers, jack screws, well drills sleigh knees, etc.11
